The Ultimate Lap

Named after one epic road race - the Carrera Panamericana - but well suited to another - the Targa Florio - Porsche's 911 Carrera RSR might have been designed with the sinuous mountain roads of Sicily in mind. The Targa Florio was a relic of a golden age - a time trial over 11 laps of the 45 mile closed road Piccolo Madonie circuit, 1973 was the last year that it formed part of the World Championship for makes. Local hero Nino Vaccarella qualified fastest in qualifying in his mighty Ferrari 312B sports prototype but his 80mph average tells you everything you need to know about a circuit where power was secondary and where traction and agility - which the 911 had in spades - were what was required for victory. While the sports prototypes broke or crashed, the Martini Carerra of Herbert Muller and Gijs van Lennep took outright victory, helping to build the legend of the 911.
